Mission

Volunteers for Youth provides services to Orange County youth helping them become contributing members of the community by:
  • Cultivating strengths
  • Encouraging positive relationships
  • Developing the ability to make responsible choices
History

Volunteers for Youth started in 1981 as a response to a need expressed by professionals in the Orange County court system. They determined that the most effective way to improve services to young people and prevent juvenile delinquency is to match high-risk youth with caring adult volunteers.

After attaining nonprofit, tax-exempt status and forming a board of directors, Volunteers for Youth was selected to be one of the Governor's one-on-one Volunteer Programs in the first round of funding by the state of North Carolina. As a Governor's One-on-One Volunteer Program, Volunteers for Youth agreed to match at least twenty delinquent young people with trained adult volunteers and to follow guidelines established by the state for such programs. The state provided partial funding and the board agreed to raise the additional funds necessary to run the organization.

In 1989, Volunteers for Youth expanded the One-on-One volunteer program to meet the needs of high risk children who are not delinquent but can nonetheless benefit from the time and attention of caring adults.

Through the Juvenile Community Services and Restitution Program, developed by Volunteers for Youth in 1992, delinquent youth pay back the community by completing community service hours at worksites throughout Orange County.

Volunteers for Youth's newest program, Teen Court, is an alternative court program for middle and high school students. First time offenders are tried and sentenced by a jury of their peers. Fellow students take on the roles of prosecutor, defense attorney, clerk, bailiff, and juror to conduct these proceedings.
