Jackie Thompson knows the local nonprofit sector as well as anyone. As the human services coordinator for the Town of Chapel Hill, Thompson works with a variety of nonprofit organizations throughout the community. Her position requires impartiality so she is unable to serve on the boards of local nonprofits. Before Thompson became the human services coordinator though, she volunteered with Volunteers for Youth both as a community service worksite coordinator and as board president. Thompson is the engaged mother of two beautiful daughters and was naturally drawn to an organization serving youth.
Thompson remembers, “While serving on another non-profit board I heard about Volunteers for Youth and what a great job they were doing with the youth in the community. I immediately wanted to be a part of this organization and make a difference in the lives of young people. My favorite memories of that time were when I became a Worksite Coordinator for the Juvenile Community Service and Restitution Program. I really enjoyed working with the program participants and being a positive role model. Even though the youth were performing community service they were gaining valuable work experience that could be used later in life. In my current position with the Town of Chapel Hill I can’t service on the Board at VFY but I do get to hear about the great programs that are still being offered.”
