The easy familiarity Tami Williams and Ginny Fowler share with one another might lead you to guess that they are two women whose friendship goes back a long ways. What might surprise you is to learn that their relationship originated with the Volunteers for Youth’s mentoring program when Tami became a mentor to 12-year-old Ginny twenty-four years ago. In an interesting role reversal, Ginny now teaches at an inner city middle school while Tami is working towards a degree in elementary education and studio art. Through many changes in the courses of their lives, one thing that has remained constant is their friendship. Ginny remembers with gratitude the significant role Volunteers for Youth played in her adolescent development, bringing Tami into her life and helping to steer her onto a productive path.
Tami is equally appreciative. “Ginny has grown to be a very lovely, well adjusted, and bright person. I am proud of her in so many ways! Ginny’s most extraordinary quality is that she teaches in a Title 1 school where she is helping children with the same issues that she grew up with. She is an amazing woman and I am very happy to be a part of her life. Without Volunteers for Youth, I would have never had this opportunity so, thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our youth!!!”
